UEFA Champions League: Bayern Munich Outclass Arsenal to Reach Semi-finals
Thrashing Arsenal 5-1, Bayern Munich Secures Semi-final Spot
Bavarian Giants Dominate in Impressive Display
In a dominant display, Bayern Munich thrashed Arsenal 5-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday. The German giants took control of the game from the outset and never looked back, with Robert Lewandowski scoring a brace and Thomas Muller, Thiago Alcantara, and Serge Gnabry also getting on the scoresheet.
Arsenal's hopes of causing an upset were dealt a blow early on when Laurent Koscielny was forced off with an injury, and things went from bad to worse for the Gunners as Bayern opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Lewandowski latched onto a pass from Muller and fired a low shot past Petr Cech into the bottom corner.
Bayern continued to dominate possession and create chances, and they doubled their lead in the 23rd minute. Muller was the provider once again, this time setting up Thiago Alcantara for a simple tap-in from close range. Arsenal struggled to get a foothold in the game, and Bayern extended their lead further just before halftime when Lewandowski scored his second of the night with a clinical finish.
The second half was a more even affair, but Bayern remained in control and added two more goals to their tally. Gnabry made it 4-0 in the 53rd minute with a powerful shot from outside the box, and Muller completed the rout in the 88th minute with a header from a corner.
Arsenal did manage to pull one back through Alexandre Lacazette in the 90th minute, but it was nothing more than a consolation goal. The Gunners now face an uphill task in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium next week, needing to overturn a 5-1 deficit to reach the semi-finals.
