Earthquakes Strike New Zealand Coast, Triggering Tsunami
Three Earthquakes, One of the Strongest Ever
Three earthquakes, including one of the strongest ever to hit the region, struck off the coast of New Zealand on Friday, triggering a tsunami warning for parts of the country. The largest quake, with a magnitude of 8.1, struck at 8:28 pm (local time) and was followed by two smaller quakes of magnitude 7.4 and 7.1.
Tsunami Risk for New Zealand
GNS Science modelling has highlighted that New Zealand's major population centers are at risk of exposure to tsunamis of varying sizes from a range of sources. New Zealand's entire coastline and some of our larger lakes are at risk of tsunami. Tsunami can flood our shores, causing property damage, injuries, and loss of life.
Lifted Tsunami Warning
The tsunami warning for parts of New Zealand was lifted on Friday afternoon, hours after officials had told residents of coastal areas to evacuate. However, the Department of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) is advising people to stay away from the shoreline and to be prepared for further aftershocks.
Recent Tsunami Events
The recent earthquake and tsunami in New Zealand are a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by these natural hazards. In 2022, a volcanic eruption and tsunami in Tonga caused widespread destruction and loss of life. It is important for New Zealanders to be aware of the risks and to have an evacuation plan in place.
